   GRAB BARS, RAILINGS, AND HANDLES are some of the most important safety items in many areas of the home, such as, toilet area, bathtubs, showers, kitchens, doorways, at steps and are available in many

styles, colors and materials. INSTALL these items BEFORE you need them:  If you reach for a grab bar that is not there you may fall and break bones, spend days in the hospital and rehab, and most likely will never fully recover.

   RAMPS AND THRESHOLDS are important both inside and outside the home. From a threshold

ramp at the front door entry to a complete modular type ramp with railing, there are many styles and types of ramps for every purpose.

   

A few of the other ramps that are available are "suitcase" ramps that fold up and can be put in the car, pathway ramps for inside or outside steps, and ramps to assist loading a wheelchair into a vehicle. The most important consideration with ramps is the incline or steepness.  The incline can vary depending on the type of use, such as, if the wheelchair is self propelled, motorized, or pushed by another person, or if a walker is being used.  The ADA reqirement for commercial installations specify 1" per foot of incline. 

   ROLL-IN SHOWERS make it easier to enter a shower with a walker or a wheelchair.  There are many sizes and styles available in barrier-free

shower systems.  It is important to choose a high quality unit that is water tight and has built-in backing for accessories, such as, grab bars, benches, and handles, etc. In most cases, these shower units can fit in the area of your existing shower or tub.

   WALK-IN TUBS can fit into the existing tub space and can make it convenient to take a bath. Some units are available with jets and other accessories.

 Outta Bed* (a bed mobility tool) and Off-the-Pot* (a bathroom utility tool) designed to reduce the risk of falling while transferring from bed to walker or wheelchair, toilet to walker or wheelchair, and getting into and out of the bathtub.
